Limping
When a player calls the big-blind pre-flop, it’s called open limping. He/she is the first player to enter the pot. It is a very bad strategy for following reasons:
You can’t win the pot pre-flop by this. It is a passive action so there’s no way you can win the pot. Let’s just call it dead cash as you didn’t make any attempts to steal the small or big blinds.
Open limping gives others a chance. The players behind you are now in a good spot. With extra cash, they can raise against your weak position. So, when more players join the pot, your odd of winning decreases.
Opponents will be likely more aggressive, keeping you on a perceived weak range. Remember, limping isn’t always a bad thing. If players before you have limped and your hand isn’t worth a raise and strong to fold, it’s better to call and see the pot.
Playing too Passively
Many poker players make a mistake of playing too passively against raises from other players. There are lots of players who flat-open with strong holdings as opposed to three betting. Choosing not to three bet pre-flop is again a big mistake for a number of reasons. First, the 3 betting will allow to add more value from your opponents by increasing the size of the pot early. Secondly, 3 betting will also decrease the number of callers and hence increase your equity in that particular hand. Your chance of winning hand with AKo/AKs or some other strong hands will increase many times.
Position Awareness
Rang and position go hand in hand. The position should influence the range of hands you are willing to play. If there are more players to act behind you, then your range should be tighter. The more number of players left, there are more chances of you playing against stronger hands. With marginal hands, it is difficult to profit when opening from early position. When you move closer to the button, widen your range. The players in the late position have a positional advantage.
Not Having a Proper Plan
More than a weakness, this is a culmination of all points mentioned above. You need to have a proper preflop strategy which will be based on analyzing and working on your weaknesses ahead of time. It will help you to build a solid foundation to become a winning player.
